The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga. The theme for this year’s Yoga Day is ‘Yoga for Humanity’ and millions of people across the world will do yoga, as a team effort to promote wellness.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Tuesday that yoga has become a global festival as there is widespread acceptance of the ancient Indian practice as he participated in the eighth International Day of Yoga (IDY) celebrations in Karnataka’s Mysuru.

“The International Day of Yoga is a fitting occasion to celebrate the benefits of Yoga to our physical and mental health. Yoga has become a global festival with it being now a part of many countries’ culture,” Modi said in a message.

He said it has helped millions of people around the world to stay healthy and take care of their spiritual needs. “Yoga is not just a physical exercise but also a spiritual experience. It is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition,” he

During the yoga demonstration in which he participated for 45 minutes, PM Modi said, “The acceptance of that amrit spirit of India which gave energy to India’s freedom struggle. That is why mass yoga demonstrations are being organized at 75 iconic locations across the country.”

President Ram Nath Kovind greeted the people on the occasion of International Yoga Day and said, “Yoga is India’s gift to humanity and it is a holistic approach to health and well-being, balancing mind, body, and soul.” He then took part in a Yoga Day demonstration at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. He also asked everyone to make yoga a part of their daily life and experience its benefits.

The theme of this year’s Yoga Day celebrations is “Yoga for Humanity” and around 25 crore people are expected to participate in various events, doing yoga in unison towards better health and wellness for all.

A flagship program in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs has also been organized for a mass Yoga Protocol on the day following the movement of the sun.

New Delhi Municipal Council organizes yoga day events at 75 locations

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) organized events at 75 locations in New Delhi on Tuesday on the occasion of International Day of Yoga.

The main event was organized at Charkha Park in Connaught Place, where Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, NDMC chairperson Bhupinder Singh Bhalla, and vice-chairperson Satish Upadhyay performed the common yoga protocol.

Besides Connaught place, the NDMC organized yoga day events at various other parks around Delhi.

In India, the day will be observed with a series of events across the country. Union Minister of AYUSH, Shripad Yesso Naik will be leading yoga demonstrations at the India Gate lawns in New Delhi, while other events are scheduled across the country, including in Lucknow, Gwalior and Bangalore.

In the United States, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has been designated as the lead US representative for the UN’s Yoga Day celebration.
